No they aren't; what they are is a means of demonstrating that something managed to sink in besides your party schedule. Depending on they field you're in, they can even mean the difference between you having someone's health and well-being in your hands or being told to go find a different line of work.

Or you could suck it up and actually study. God forbid that you have to earn a grade, and not have it handed to you. You are the perfect example of what is wrong with this country and I can only say........Oh Canada!

Only if you don't study for them. In that case, you would need to arrest yourself for forcing it to happen.
