Having read a good deal of Kafka's work, I don't think he is. I really think that Kafka expects us to believe that he is a normal, sane human being who just happened to be turned into a bug. It's not a dream, just surreal.

Yes I enjoyed many of his stories. I don't believe his writings were of a dream state at least not all of them. That particular story though does have parallels with the non free will state of another in the Trial. Franz Kafka's life was troubled thats true and he was Jew in a always pogrom existing world of that time. Do you know the story Bronsky, his autobiographer tells of the person he shared a office with in the insurance company?

I always felt that the main character felt that he had been the mainstay of the family for ages and was taken for granted. He was no more important than a cockroach.
