Why doesn't the government issue i.d. cards to those of us who are Social Security and Social Security Disability. It would save having to bring tons of paperwork to some facility when we are trying to get further assistance. Don't you think? Why can't the government ever think of things like this? I know stupid question?

That is what I was saying, it would be too efficient and too normal to make something as unwieldy as SS is now more simple and easier to access by all with a card that worked like a credit card with all the info on the strip on the back for the government to do something like this without bitc*ing that they cannot rip more money off the American public doing that.

I realize VA cards and such already have that info on them, but they are not considered to be a viable source when you are on SS or SSDI. Which is pretty stupid. But then no one ever accused the government of being smart in the people's interest either.

Think of the people that would be out of work if the paperwork were cut back on. If your suggestion were followed, what's to gain except convenience of the retiree, more efficient processing, lower costs for the process ?
'Think' -- this word is not listed in the federalese dictionary.

The OZ govt tried to issue a Identity card here some time ago and boy did it provoke a reaction.
There were protest marches all around the country and so the govt didn't do it.
The objection was about civil liberties and how the govt could then do the Big Brother thing and have complete info on all Aussies and share this info amongst its different agencies and departments.
Everyone hated the idea that the govt would have all this info about them. Like a huge spy and pry machine that was out to get cha!!!
We do have pension cards and veterans cards and medicare cards so whats the difference. They have all your info on them anyway.

Some of my patients were vets, and it really made things so much easier when they started doing the card. Especially for those who had a caregiver instead of family, as we don't always know the answers they needed and the patient was not always able to give answers. Yes the one card with all info is an excellent idea, which is why the gov, will never do it.

No, it is actually a good idea. For once, they can get people's details, and associate them with their social security numbers, and when ever it is needed, the SSN's is all that would be required to get your details. Neat idea. After this one-time effort, all that would be needed for you to take to the office is only if anything changed in your data, that the govt. should be made aware of.
By itself it is a huge effort, and hopefully someone takes up this idea in the future.
Good luck with your efforts !!

It might cut down on red tape prevent checks from being late or mailed to the wrong address. In other words it might be efficient and the government cannot have that happening.

It's coming. As I understand it, in the not all that distant future we'll have ID cards that look like a driver's license. That magnetic strip will have everything there is no know about us on it.

my VA-Outpatient card has the magnetic strip on it and it was issued to me in 1974. So they have had the technology for a long time, apparently they just not opt to use it.

Well, it's not a bad idea. They do it with child support, but at least feel lucky you get SS. Time I reach retirement (40 years), it will all be gone!
