Well, First off Congratulations on your good choice of Automobiles. Volvo is one of the finest crafted and most reliable Scandinavian automobiles available (Saab's were pretty reliable too for a bit). I can tell you that if you would have bought American you would have had more than just a problem with the speedometer.
I think that on newer Volvo's there is a "sensor" of some kind located just under or parallel to the battery. This sensor relays the information to the dash display. Since I don't know the year of the car, I can't say for sure. A friend of mine has a 97 850 with over 200k on it, and so far he has been problem free.
Sorry I couldn't be of any more, but I am not too familiar with the specifics of the Volvo Electrical system (I'm more into Mercedes. :)
Merry Christmas!

Take the car to a Volvo dealer. You might have a bad sending unit in the transmission, a bad speedometer, or just a bad wiring connection. The diagnostic fee will be small compared with trying to replace one thing at a time until you guess right and the diagnostic fee is usually applied to the repair if done right away.
