In computer terms, a "gateway" is a device (such as a computer, router or server) which gives you access to the Internet. If you have your computer hooked to a router in your home, it is acting as a "gateway". It takes your Internet request, send them to your ISP for processing, and then returns the results to you. This protects your computer from direct access to the Internet (and its hackers, viruses, etc) and also allows multiple computers to use one Internet connection at the same time. The "gateway" is the only computer actually talking over that connection. It manages request for all the other computers.

The servers at your ISP provide the same function, only the "gateway" not just you but hundreds of others customers with the Internet over a single high volume connection (such as a T1 line).

Hi,

It is a device used to convert one computer protocol to another.

As in link 2 separate types of network with each other.

Definition is here :-

I can't think of any use you would have for such an item unless you were in information technology, but then you'd already know what a gateway is.
