In many stores you will already have troubles paying with a € 100 bill, and nearly non will accept a € 200, not even when you have to pay something like € 195, So forget using € 500 bills.
But in the USA most people never handle a bill bigger than $ 20, as that is the size the ATM's mostly give.

500 Euros is about $750 U.S.D.. just how many stores can you walk into in AmeriKa and pay for a $10 purchase with a $500 dollar bill, let alone $750?
I don't know how many AmeriKans I have seen in 3rd world countries that think nothing of paying for a $1 purchase with a $20 or a $50 bill and then complain when the merchant can't make change...

Ha ha. Not many people have that kind of cash in their wallet - I've never tried!
You can break them in a bank, however.
In Ireland the €500 is not legal tender, so only banks will accept them. This is basically a security measure, as shops are not willing to store large amounts of cash.

It won't work in a flee market. It will work in supermarket. In small grocery stores they might ask you to bring a smaller bill.
