Your question reminded me of this quote:

"It is true enough, of course, that a pungent happiness comes chiefly in certain passing moments; but it is not true that we should think of them as passing. . . To do this is to rationalize happiness, and therefore to destroy it. Happiness is a mystery like religion, and should never be rationalized. . . A man may have, for instance, a moment of ecstasy in first love, or a moment of victory in battle. . . The cause which the flag stands for may be foolish and fleeting; the love may be calf-love, and last a week. But the patriot thinks of the flag as eternal; the love thinks of his love as something that cannot end. These moments are filled with eternity; these moments are joyful because they do not seem momentary. . . Man cannot love mortal things. He can only love immortal things for an instant." - G.K. Chesterton

Nothing seemingly physical lasts for ever, you can see forms coming and going, changing into other things etc. However, I wonder about the eternity of consciousness, Hindu, Yogic and Taoist wisdom (amongst others I suspect) say that the ultimate reality is without beginning or end, being outside/containing time and space. I wonder about this a lot, but i'm not sure my head is big enough to fit enough stuff in to come up with a meanigfull answer!

Oh Joel, what a beautiful story that is. I know from what you've said before that you have agonized over this for a while. It's great to know your father finally set things straight and apologized for the way things went between them. I do believe that when people fall in love there is a reason for that and that reason never dies. I believe that when people have fights or problems in marriage, they should go back and focus on the reason they fell in love. They should learn how to decide what really matters and stop sweating small things. I'm so glad you feel that your parents will have a better relationship from now on. It's nice to know you had such a good time with them. I am very happy for you Joel, hugs!

Energy lasts forever, although the form it takes will likely change. New energy can not be created, and existing energy cannot be destroyed, so all of the energy that exists in the universe has always been, and will always be.

Everything else in the known, tangible universe is finite, but at the same time, all matter is energy, per the equation below, so everything we know will eventually be gone, but the sum of their parts will still exist.

Your spirit lives on forever. But this earthly body will not live for very long. In fact its true that everything living will at some time die.

The Bible says that God will wrap Heaven and earth up like an old cloth. (Not literally...just means He will bring it to an end.) Then He will make a new heavens and a new earth.
