You either want a city ham or a country ham; the country ham is more work, but a city ham also requires that you put a glaze on it if you want the nice crunchiness. I suggest you google "alton brown country ham" - Alton Brown has a website that explains the difference, tips on buying a ham, and prep & recipe instructions. Good luck with your old-fashioned ham!

I think there is a company in VA called Smithfield and you may be able to order a ham....I think the hickory smked one is their claim to fame.
Any grocer near you that sells Boar's head in their deli dept will be able to sell you a portion of a ham and it is not spiral cut. They have a ham called sweet slice and it is good...however the Va smoked ham is my favorite.
Now I bought a spiral ham last yr from Costco(it was not honey based either...just smoked ham)....and like you I was getting tired of the run-of-the-mill spiral hams....this one was very good....and it was spiral cut....I would buy it again.
Do you have a Trader Joe's near you?....they sell hams too and just last weekend they were giving samples out of this ham and although I didnt try it myself....it looked good and smelled good....like old fashioned kind as I think you are referring....and TJ's has a good reputation with selling good stuff and the people trying the samples seemed to like it.
And if you are still confused, go to an upscalish grocery store back to their meat dept and ask them....maybe you could even sample their choices.

Ask the butcher at your local supermarket. Who better to give you the answer you seek? I agree on the spiral ham. It's a creepy version of a good meat!

The type of ham you are talking about cost around $ 2.69LLB
You will want to chose a rear cut called ham shank.
You can find this cut in any good grocery store

Get a old fashioned country ham. They are the best. Me I'm not doing turkey or ham, I'm doing a pork loin!

Do you have a good deli/bakery by you? I didn't know some of the differences & I asked them. I also got some free samples to try! There are many good ideas out there. Try this place http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ham. It explains the differences for you. This place http://www.bettycrocker.com/ has some good ideas too. Hope this helps.

I am very partial to MASH's brand ham...it glazes beautifully is juicy and you can slice it as thick as you want...it is lower in salt, yet in no way bland!...and just plain scrumptious.
I use a mixture of syrup, chopped pineapple, and brown sugar for the glaze [after scoring it and inserting cloves]

I buy the old fashioned one with the bone in and the thick skin on. Just ask the grocer or butcher and they will know.
