The distance from zero is called "absolute value."

Represented like so- |-8|

The absolute value of -8 is 8.

Try this- it may be impossibly hard, but worth it-

Basically, it's the value of a number regardless of its sign.
The absolute value of -2 is 2, and the absolute value of 2 is 2.
In other words:
|-2| = 2
|2| = 2

The absolute value of a number is the numerical value of the number with a positive sign. For example, if you had the number -2.7, the absolute value of it would be 2.7, because you ignore all negative signs. It is easy to see that for all positive real numbers, their absolute values are the same as themselves. Absolute values have numerous applications when it comes to graphs, fields, vectors, rings and other branches of mathematics. The original definition of the absolute value of a number used to only apply to real numbers, but has since been adapted for complex numbers also.

There is a lot of useful information at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absolute_value

Hope that helps you understand a bit more.

We don't know what you want to know about absolute values.

I will tell you they are always positive. The absolute value of -9, for example, is 9. The absolute value for 9 is 9.
