It goes to advertising, staff salaries, direct mail, transportation expenses and other costs of running for election. The bumper stickers and yard signs, the t-shirts the campiagn commercials all comes from money donated to a campaign or PAC.

I work in the House of Representatives.
Campaigns, Propoganda, Phone bills, Gas, Housing, rent for office spaces, dinners, meetings, fundraisers etc
its spread throughout and yes the canidate does do better the more money they have, its unfair. Its alot like High school and a big fat popularity contest in here.

When I worked on a congressional campaign our money went to:
Salaries for paid staff
Yard signs, big road-side signs, bumper stickers, etc.
Printed flyers and materials
Gas for traveling to events
Office space
Office supplies
Bills (phone, electricity, insurance, etc.)
Hosting parties to encourage people to show up and listen
Advertising on radio, tv, newspaper
lots of other little stuff
