If your talking about the little red wagon, Oh yeah. and there was always someone falling off. And we live on a hill in San Francisco, so we did pick up the speed. Those were the days, when Heaven forbid, we did not have to or even think of wearing a helmet. We also used to go to Dolores Park, which had 3 levels of grass from top to bottom. We used to physically roll our bodies down the hill, like a boulder, and see who could get to the bottom first. Simple but clean fun. That or find a large piece of cardboard and slide down.

Yes! That was so much fun to get with your friends and tear down the hill in a fully-loaded Flyer And in the wintertime in my small town the roads would be closed on the hill and we'd take old inner tubes of tires and sail down the hills (and usually end up in the ditch below) My sister still gets a pain in ther arm in cold weather , a memory of a broken arm from a sledding party 45 years ago .

My mind is fuzzy this morning. Was an American Flyer a snow sled or a red wagon with wheels? I think my snow sled was some type of "flyer" since it went so fast! LOL

I was thinking of winter time and sledding in the snow. One of my grandpa's would patiently trudge up the big hill, pulling the sled and me. When we finally got to the top he would get on the sled behind me (it was one of those long toboggan type wooden things) and we would fly down that long steep rolling Iowa hill. Grandpa's weight or good steering gave us a long, fast slide to the bottom. His pant legs would be full of snow before he could get us stopped. I'd be howling and laughing. Great memory. Thank you Wally.

Not on a sleigh, but I do remember going down a hill on the hood off of an old wrecked car.

Now, that was fun, loaded with kids and just like another car wreck.

Some of the things we did back then, would never be allowed now. . . .with good reason.

I wonder how we made it out of childhood alive.

It was fun and we didn't have to pay a dime for all the fun, and memories.

Not certain what an American Flyer is but in the UK kids in the 60's made go-karts out of any old bits of wood they could find, wheels and rope or string. My brother who was 3 yrs older than me (Bj) could always" find" an orange box when necessary. I had a Silver Cross toy pram that would oftentimes lose its wheels for a go-kart! Even though I had contributed to it, usually under duress lol, I was never allowed to have a go on it. As a kid I could fall out of or off of anything and my specs were always the main casualty! But our mother put paid to it all in the end coz she gave my pram to one of my cousins because she said I was never playing with it and I also got a lecture about being ungrateful!! The go-kart always ended up getting smashed up due to having no brakes and in the end no-one else would "donate" wheels. There were many accidents in the go-karts and someone always went home with a bloody nose.

It was great! At the bottom of the hill was a creek! They never let me steer.
Edit: I was thinking of a flexible flyer sled. I forgot you're from CA. Did you mean a radio flyer wagon?

YES! And when we reached the bottom of the hill, one of our Dad's would hook the sleds by ropes to the back of the 4 X 4 and pull us back to the top....We would do this forever!!
If we were lucky,we'd take a hot chocolate break at one of the closest houses! How much fun and what memories those are!

You bet I do!! I used to put the rope behind us and steer with my feet. My brother would sit behind me on his knees. We really did feel like we were flying and we rarely fell off. The only down side(no pun intented) was the long walk up the hill. The only time we went home was to change our mitts or go to the washroom.

Screaming all the way would be me, my bro used to head down the gravel drive hell bent for leather pulling me and dump me out, still have scars on my face from it. Then there was Grandma's house, down the hill I went by the bee hives after Grandpa said they would get me--pffft, bees liked me, yeah right--9 stingers in my head not to mention the other ones. Last trips in the AF's. Plant your wagon--found one at the dump in the 80's and planted flowers in it.

I also remember the fence at the bottom of the hill. If you couldn't make the turn, everyone rolled off before you hit it.
