The reason they delete solicitation is because this is a website designed for questions and answers. They don't want people to post spam and say "buy my black market Viagra". There are other websites for that, and nobody here goes to them because they suck.
The community guidelines about solicitation aren't vague. They're really cut and dry: no soliciting anybody for any purpose, period. There is a big difference between a solicitation and a question. Soliciting people to answer a question and asking a question are two different things. Soliciting people to answer would be like saying "Do you think I can get 100 answers to this question? Please star and share with your friends." Other common solicitiations are questions like "Can I have a star/hug/massage, etc.?"
The community guidelines about chatting are perhaps a little vague, but only because it would take forever to provide an example for everything that is considered "chat".
I think a big problem, however, is that there is a culture within P&S that believes the community guidelines are useless and Yahoo! doesn't know what they're doing. People have this expectation that there is nothing they can do, so they say "why even bother to try and figure it out?" By clicking "read more" when looking at the community guidelines, a lot of the ambiguity disappears. When a person gets a violation notice, they should take the time to consider what it was about the question or answers in violation that made it a violation. If you aren't able to figure it out, then you should appeal. In fact, it'd be foolish not to appeal.
I've said this many times before on here, but the community guidelines are what make this website unique and distinguishable from message boards or craigslist. Without them, it would be like if your favorite sport had no rules -- it would just be a bunch of idiots running around with a ball and no purpose or goals to achieve.
That being said, a good guideline to follow before asking a question would be to ask yourself "would anybody really be interested to come back and read this?" If the answer is no, then you should be prepared to get a violation if you post it.

Well, that's because Yahoo Answers is only meant for questions like, "Why is the sky blue?" and when you post something here offering a trade, that's actually considered to be "spam," so your trade offers would probably do better on a Pokemon bulletin board, like one of the listings at the link, below. Good luck!... ☺

I agree that some of the questions that are deleted are wrongly deleted, but on the other hand a lot of questions and answers that do directly violate the terms and conditions get deleted and the people writing them continually lose their accounts and still complain after they knowingly violate those terms on purpose.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand and grasp the concept of being punished for knowingly going against the rules and regulations.

Because you're supposed to be seeking knowledge here rather than asking for money, web hits, hugs, go-to-my-question, someone to buy your car, female attention, etc.

It's called yahoo answers, not yahoo shopping network or yahoo dating service. I can't stand it when people abuse this site.
