Oscar is a nice name for a grouch, a fish, and an academy award. Oscar was once an OK name for a child, but Oscar is not a nice name for today's child.

Long before Oscar the Grouch there were Oscar Boom in "Alley Oop" and Oscar with the very prominent teeth in "Popeye." And although Oscar Wilde and Oscar Levant were two of the wittiest men the world has ever known, there are some negative associtations with both. In short, unless it's already the name of a beloved family member you want to honor, I'd vote against it. If you're simply looking for a name starting with O, there are Oliver and Owen.

It's a nice name for a person. As a child he's likely to get teased and endure Oscar the Grouch jokes but it's a handsome name.

I like Oscar.

Yes, there's the Grouch. But there's also Wilde. And plenty of other famous Oscars through the ages.

It's familiar without being common, and interesting without being invented.

I'd use Oscar well before I'd consider naming my son Jaden or Brayden.

It's not my personal favourite. Reminds me too much of Oscar the Grouch from Sesamee Street.
