First of all, every labour is different, ranging from uncomfortable to very painful. It's not just all women who are different, I had 6 labours and they were all different. You won't know what you're dealing with until the times comes. I remember being scared the first time too. In the event it was hard work but not really painful. Talk to your doctor in advance about pain relief, and keep your options open. A lot depends on the skill of the doctor and nurses. Midwives are better but not always available.

Gas & air does work. It's very old fashioned now, but usually still available and puts you in control. That's a nice feeling, when everything else feels like it's beyond your control!

My daughter had her first child this year and she had the mildest discomfort, like period pains, and only for 3 hours. You may be as lucky as her. Good luck!

Labor doesnt hurt. Its like a bad period.

Delivery hurts, but only for about 2 minutes. If you want a pain killer for that, that will stop the pain and still leave you with all your functions and birthing options get a spinal. You can get up and walk around, have the urge to push, and still do water birth if you want.

Narcotics work well during labor and transition if you're just too sensitive to pain to wait until you can get a spinal, but avoid demerol, it fogs your mind so you dont remember anything, and you WILL want to remember the birth and labor of your child.

Epidurals keep you from moving about, and you must give birth on your back, and in just about all cases you lose the urge to push, or the feeling of pushing hard enough. This can lead to fetal distress. You avoid this with a spinal morphine. The only risk is the same as a epidural procedure, the risk of ingury from the needles. But with a spinal its a one time dose, needle is in and out, unlike an epi where the tube is left in place for a drip.

But like I said, labor itself is not painful, its like a bad period. Tansition is a mofo. Delivery hurts for a few pushes and then all the pain is over.

well I had my child vaginal delivery and only had nubain (drug through IV). I had all back labor. Once the drug kicked in I could barely feel when I needed to push during a contraction. I am so thankful no epidural was needed heard a lot of women complain of back problems for the rest of their life due to that. But if you have a c-section I think you will have to get a epidural with no choice in the matter..also they tried to put the mask on me that helps you breathe or whatever but made it worse so I tossed it..got on my nerves..lol!
Labor pains feel like the worse pain ever its hard to describe but each individuals pain varies on what and how they can control it.. good luck!! Hope you have limited pain..=)

Not to scare you but I had an epidural and it didn't work. I felt everything going on. However, whatever that was they put in my IV after the baby was out worked pretty good. I'm not sure what it was. I'm guessing it was a narcotic since they waited until the baby was born to give it.

This time around I'm not bothering with the epidural. It wasn't all that bad.

To help with labor pains she can take a warm bath, try to relax as much as possible during the contractions (tensing up makes them worse), use a heating pad, or try swaying like she is slow dancing. You could help my applying counter pressure to her hips and keeping her hydrated. Also, make sure she eats something light, but full of protein before heading to the hospital. Once labor gets intense she will need her energy but won't want to think about food. The bloody show usually happens during early labor.

Epidural is definitely the best as you feel next to nothing. gas and air is good. it doesn't kill the pain but it does make you feel spaced out so it kind of takes the edge off it. i am not gonna lie, labour pain is the worst pain you will ever have to go through ( well it was for me) but you soon forget the pain once the baby is here. if you are that scared then opt for the epidural and you wont feel a thing! i have epidural with my first but gas and air with my last two.

I've had 2 children and both labours were very different. One lasted just 6 hours and second was 30 hours!

I used the same pain relief for both:
TENS machine - great, especially during early labour
Gas & Air - Worked for me
Pathadine - Again I found great but I know it makes some people feel sick

Good luck

TENS machine took mind of the contraction pain, but was a pain in itself. Entonox really helped make me feel relaxed, like being drunk! But the effect didn't work for too long, and my gas bottle ran out at time of bearing down! Also had pethedine, that knocked me out, so i could sleep and relax. Had the epidural, but it didn't work. On reflection i am glad it didn't work as i went into the bearing down stage, can't imagine how i would have got her out without control over my body.

Went into labour not wanting drugs, as feared it would make baby drowsey, and so not able to bond. But it all went ok, baby was wide awake with eyes fully alert and happy!

I just used gas and air on both of my births. It hurt a hell of a lot, but it meant that when it came time to push, I could feel the contractions and it was over quicker. Also, there was no recovery time as such. As soon as the babies were born I was able to be up and about and the pain was over and I didn't feel woosey. Personally I wouldn't go for any other pain relief. Up to you though. You just have to do what's right for you.

I had the epidural and I felt no pain after I got it. The labor pain felt like period cramps 10 times worse. I had back labor and it felt like a real bad back ache. Breathing is good.

Don't be scared. just think that you will meet your baby for the first time =)
