The walls are made of concrete, but the insert does not go in all the way. i would need to remove the walls to make it function properly. is this even possible to do without makeing the chimney cave in?

NO. The concrete surface you refer to is probably not ordinary concrete as you may think. The fire brick is there to protect the other surfaces from the heat emitted by the burning in the fireplace. An insert alone, will not provide the protection to keep your house from burning to the ground.

hard to believe your firebox is made of concrete and not firebrick...however your damper , throat and flues are more than likely supported by these walls ...not a good idea to remove anything in the firebox...exchange insert for one that is sized for your firebox...wouldnt you have measured this before you bought one?
