It had no effect at all. Slaves were not "Freed" untill 1863, 3 years after the war started, by the emancipation proclaimation; which only freed the slaves in the rebelling states. Got that? IN the states over which he had no control.
His election caused the civil war because he was a strong advocate of federal authority over state soverenty.
That is what the war was over. Not slavery.
The emancipation proclaimation was signed to keep Britan out of the war because they were about to recognize the independence of the confederacy. And the bridish navy would have made a mockery out of the union blockade of the southern ports.
As some one said, this was a very complexed issue that is pretty much glossed over by high school history classes.
