Perhaps the government is telling us that it doesn't want us to live longer than the life expectancy of the paper card!

Over here in OZ ours are plastic coated but not as thick or hard as laminated cards.
You can cut them with scissors but not tear them by hand. They wash well too!!! LOL
The govt send us a new one every year just before your birth month.
Drivers licences are plastic like credit cards.

They're just like money...they can be easily copied. Imagine if people laminated money.... Then, we would not be able to correctly determine if it is counterfeit or not...because of the lamination.
Best!!

I've had the same question, but also have another:
I had to go to the SS office to get a new card, as I lost custody of mine in the divorce... All around the office are signs warning us about identity theft, and as you say, they tell us not to carry our cards with us. But when I stood at the window to apply for the new one, the clerk asked me what my SS number is. And so, in front of everyone in the waiting room, I had to announce all the numbers!!! (At least at the VA you only give your last four!)

You are not supposed to carry them around in your wallet.but leave them locked up in a safe box at home . So they don't need to be laminated. With identity theft why would you want to take it out of the house.

Since you aren't supposed to carry it with you, anymore, because of the possibility of it's being stolen and then identity theft, you won't wear it out because it is either in a safe deposit box, or hopefully, at least in a safe place. And I have had four of them, once when I was young, and 3 others with name changes from marriages and divorces.

Crystal: Do you do everything
the government tells you to do?
I laminated mine as soon as I
got it and that was way back in
the last millennium.
