Yeah, I remember it. It is another example of how the world kowtows to the state of Israel (Why is beyond me). The Liberty was on an intelligence gathering mission in support of Israel in international waters. There was no reason for the attack, the Liberty showed her colors, attempted to ID herself electronically but jackasses from Israel continued the attack. Whats worse is the US fleet in the area was ordered to recall it's planes that were on the way to render protection. The US has repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to bend over backwards for the Israelis even at the expense of it's own. Go figure.

Yes. I was on another ship of the Special Project Fleet: USS Banner (AGER-1). BTW, the Naval Hospital at Marine Corps Base 29 Palms is now named for the skipper of the Liberty. He was a native son of that area of the Mojave Desert.

The Israeli and American governments conducted multiple inquiries into the incident, and issued reports concluding that the attack was the result of a mistake, caused by confusion among the Israeli attackers about the precise identity of the USS Liberty and the fact that the United States Ambassador to the United Nations had publicly announced to the world at the U.N. that the United States had no ships within 350 miles of Israel and the battle.

This took place during the 6-day war back in 1967. What is your point?

The USS Liberty was an intelligience gathering ship that was attacked by Israeli forces during the Six-day war in 1967.
The are those the say the Israelis attacked on purpose to prevent the US from leaking information to the Egyptians. There are others that say it was pure accident, that the Israelis considered everything floating or flying a possible enemy during that war.

Do you remember the USS Pueblo?

Info for those who care; The Israelis did pay reparations of $13 million. You don't know Jack!!

Yes I do.

We told the Israeli government that no US ships were anywhere near that area. (We made an error tracking the location of the USS Liberty.)

The Israeli military identified the USS Liberty as a US ship but the responsible officer failed to plot the information on the map and also failed to brief his replacement.

This incident has been studied to death and it is long past time for people to simply accept that both the US and Israeli militarys screwed up.

Yes, over thirty American sailors died because israel attacked an American military ship in international waters with out cause! They've never apologized or repaid the families of the dead and injured for their terror activities!

No I do not remember, because I was not born. But I do know it was controversial. I don't think these sort of "mistakes" don't happen without a reason.
