Is there any free, reliable attendance and leaves recording software for a company with 50 staff ? It must have the option to apply for leave etc

The programs which have thiese features are shareware, maybe you have to pay for it, but the "Time and Attendance Plus" is good, it can allows you to use any PC on your network to record and report on employee work hours. It completely replaces manual time card machines or your hand written time and attendance records.
