I would buy a head cleaner on-line, but where they
sell them they won't guarantee delivery before Christmas. So what materials should I use

run a brand new, never run tape, for about 5 minutes. new tapes are especially abraisive and will work about as well as the cleaning version. that should remove the debris.

Buy it in a shop, either a camera shop or an electrical like Comet / Currys.

YOU CAN USE Q TIPS AND RUBBING ALCOHOL. PERSONALLY I WOULDN'T USE A HEAD CLEANER. IT PUTS A LOT OF WARE AND TARE ON YOUR HEADS. BUT OF COURSE THAT IS YOUR DECISION. THE ABOVE WORKS REAL GOOD. BE SURE TO LET DRY BEFORE USING. AND DON'T HAVE DRIPPING WHEN USING. JUST GOOD AND DAMP.
