AT first I was simply going to say this should be under "Polls" but on second thought I'll bring up something else that came to mind..I'll preface by saying, I'm Jewish and have belief in an Omnipotent Creator.

I certainly agree that one does not prove validity of another subjective belief by simply negating an aspect of belief of another.

And more importantly, one does not prove a contrasting belief by attempting to cast doubt and find flaws in objective evidence shown by another, yet this is the entire foundation of the "evidence" for Creationism and Intelligent Design. Scientific method cannot be applied to its hypotheses, because falsifiability is not allowed for dogma, and it makes no predictions, is not observed, etc. There is no objective, testable data to support its claims.

On the other hand, their proponents, claim victories of proving it by casting doubts with strawman claims about evolutionary theory, time and time again, often costing taxpayers great amounts of money when failed attempts to interject religion into public schools under the guise of a "science" alternative to evolutionary theory, fails for that reason.

Today I brought up evolutionary theory under the Religion & Spirituality section, something I often complain about seeing here since it is Biology, and a cornerstone of modern biology and medicine at that. Very little of modern biology, advancements in genetics and genetic diseases and bioengineering can be understood without understanding of evolutionary theory. It is real, it is used to make predictions and create new things for human use..for good or harm ( depending on your perspective of cloning and stem cell research?) Immunology and germ warfare...we wouldn't be concerned about bird flu if evolution didn't happen. We know more about evolution than gravity, yet because of indoctrinated self concepts evolution is challenged and feared.

Often, challenges or threats to deeply ingrained self-concepts and paradigms take generations to accept the evidence. For Ignaz Semmelweis, and Joseph Baron Lister., they were rejected by many in their day for claiming GERMS caused disease..

If a belief is valid, it can and will withstand any challenge put before it. Yet whatever challenges or threats may be put before it do not alternatively "prove" another unless the alternative concept has its own objective evidence to be tested and proven through that method as well.

Science at this point in time, may negate aspects of dogma or it may not, however, it doesn't even address the issue of an omnipotent Creator Deity because we do not have any objective data to be used to apply to the scientific method to say one way or other, God exists. Until that time, it is a matter of subjective faith. Subjective experience and reports may well be true..or they may be delusion..it is up to the individual, through belief, to decide.

Shalom :)

To prove one's own beliefs correct by way of exclusion, they would have to disprove ALL possible beliefs but their own. So I guess it's possible from a theoretical standpoint, but I don't think its ever been done or ever will be.

If you're talking about religion, I don't think anyone can prove anything at this point. The best I could do in my case is to provide a solid argument for Judaism by both presenting evidence in support of it, while using logic to refute the most common arguments against Judaism. So showing other beliefs to be false would be part of making a strong case for my own beliefs being right (while again, not proving them), but knocking the belief's of others would not be sufficient to prop up my own.

People hate me because I use some other religions (and non-religions) to prove my beliefs. I believe turning your back on one idea causes your beliefs to be faulted. For instance, if a Christian or Jew actually believes that Darwin is full of crap, then they have some explaining to do about Noah's ark. You really think a pair of every animal (and seven of some) would actually fit in the ark? Obviously animals must change and adapt otherwise this wouldn't work, even with the ark being so huge.

As the way I understnad your question I shall answer it.

Well NO....i do not try to prove my self., by any means. explanations are done.

The best way is to reason out things to the other person.
And in that persons opnion, if he/she thinks I am trying to prove his belief is wrong, then surely that person has reason to doubt ownself.

With regard to faith, yes I do the same to explain and offer my view, since if i am to prove or argue on that issue, have to be an a'lim or higher. And also according to Islam you are not allowed to put down anyone on their present state of belief, instead guide them right, with advise and references.

Trying to prove makes the other person defend or prove they are right too. The end will be conflicts and losing your own stand too.

Also the the right stands for it's self and defends it self too.... as the saying goes ........" facts are stubborn".

So is the faith of Islam. Since the Quran defends and guards it self.

Hope the answer here is Good and Right.

Judaism is unique among the world’s religions in that it claims no copyright on, or exclusivity to, truth. It does not denounce other faiths as misguided or heretical. It is adamant that there are many paths to the one God. Judaism is a path, not the path. There is no one way. There is no one great truth, but rather a series of truths possessed by each nation that, when brought together, creates the truth. And this is what makes every nation indispensable. Jews, Christians, and Muslims could learn much from one another if they would only just stop and listen. As long as any religion leads to humility and worship of the one God, to passionate religious rituals and compassion and loving-kindness, then it has created a legitimate path to the source of the universe.

I can prove it without showing other belief's false. I dont believe other faith's are false..like i was just replying to a Hindu guy...I've studied Hinduism for many years, and I found that it says everything that the Bible says. The only problem is its written like a riddle. And there is a key. If you can find the key, you can find everything there. A Christian wouldn't have to disprove Hinduism.

proving someone else is wrong just proves someone else is wrong.

personally, I don't care if everyone on Earth except me believes in the Holy Toaster, IF they let me eat my bagels toasted, I am fine with it.

as a student of science (for mumblety-mumble years) i DO get a little ticked when someone says "I dont' understand the Big Bang, so that proves God created the Universe" Huh? Hey, guess what? The Big Bang is based on General Relativity... what's harder to understand than that? Pretty much nothing.

Hahaha,

I for one dont.

If my belief is true then it shall stand true irrespective of anyone else' belief to the contrary. I dont need to prove someone else' beliefs false to uphold mine. Ones who do so dont have complete faith in their own beliefs, hence stoop to the level of proving the other beliefs wrong.

Definately not me, as my belief teaches me to respect all beliefs, adn pick up the good from all.

I don't know where you are coming from for this question. It's illogical to denounce another's belief when speaking the truth and the truth will win out. As a Christian, I have defended my faith in Christ hundreds of times and I only asked the other person to prove me wrong. It's never happened yet.

You cannot prove any belief is right or wrong unless you use the bible and it has to follow the full Word Of God to be right
