my wife has tried everything she knows to coax her up there, she's never hurt the kitten, or so much as scolded her. why does our kitten love my shoulder ,but scorn my wife's attempts to let her ride?

Kittens of both sexes seem to do this to males more than females; it's weird! Once they have chosen their favorite 'tree', no other will do.
They drop the habit after a few weeks once they realise there are real trees to climb and get their claws into!

I think it's just one of those unique "perfect matches" between cat and human when the right two get together. My previous cat Holly always sat on my shoulder when she was a kitten, so much so, that I seriously considered changing her name to Polly. She even used to attempt to sit on my shoulder when I was in the bath!

No matter how kind we are, or how well we feed them, cats always choose their own "special" person.

Weird how it seems to be that they prefer guys to girls for this! When we got our 2 kittens, one of them (little boy) headed straight for the back of the sofa and hid there for 2 days, scared witless. The other one (little girl) went straight to my hubby's shoulder. He has long hair and she nestled herself in, got very comfy, and was there for the whole night! She didn't seem that interested in me but that didn't bother me, the only thing we put it down to was height - cats like their vantage points, and hubby is taller than I am. We both have long hair, must both smell the same to a new kitten, and were both unknown to the kittens before we brought them home. It didn't last long though, they soon got too big and started climbing the curtains instead.....but that's another story lol!

My kitten does the same with my partner, he loves riding around on his shoulder but won't do it with me. On the other hand my kitty loves cuddling up in bed with me and 'hugging' but wont with my partner. Maybe your kitty just prefers your shoulder. I think it's more a question of the personality of the cat then of her behavior towards your partner.

well all cats and kittens are different.... my cat viciously attacks my sister occasionally, and she's the only one he does that to, to everyone else he's a lovable little suck-up, but towards her he is occasionally hostile. your kitten probably just feels more comfortable with you, my grandma's Egyptian Mau absolutely adores me and follows me around everywhere and she wont go to anyone else no matter how hard they try.

Maybe you give kitty a better ride. Who knows why cats do these things?

The same thing happened with my cat, Baby, (who passed away in 2000.) He would only let me pick him up not any one else in my family. Animals are funny, they get attatched to one person and don't let any one else in.

Your shoulder might be larger, less sloped, or otherwise seem more secure to your kitty.
