The Funiculi/Funicula (yes, there is a song about it) is the steepest train-type vehicle I've ever ridden. It transports people up the steep, rocky slopes in Capri on what seems to be a 45 degree slope.

In NSW the steepest incline on the rail system is the climb from Wynyard to the Harbour Bridge (although it sounds like the climb out of the Lane Cove River valley will be steeper when that line opens).

Of course, the railway at Katoomba is steeper, but that is a cable railway, not adhesion.

Either at the top, or the bottom, of the incline.
