I'm filling out job applications...usually you can list 3 or 4 previous employers. I have a choice between an earlier employer that gave me a great performance review and a later one that gave me a so-so one (the manager was a bit nuts). Both of these were 3-6 years ago. Probably neither place remembers me, but I was wondering if they'd still have any records. If they still do I'd prefer to list the earlier job, if not I figure it will look better if I just list my most recent jobs without a gap. BTW, these were entry-level low wage jobs and the app is for a similar job.

It's really a 'discretionary' measure on part of ex-employers. Based on the length / complexity of your employment with them, they might keep your records for maybe the current financial year (till they close the books and payroll audits), or they may keep it archived on computer files and databases for about 5 years or more.

As long as you have verified and original records of your employment with them, your fine.

There are certain statutory requirements, that vary per state and per industry. Also because of tax and auditing purposes those records are usually kept for a while. With today's technology record retention is usually not a big deal.

Also as a financial services executive, I recommend checking out www.learntosucceed.biz. They can make the difference, sound career advice and they will answer your specific questions.
Good Luck.

The store closing wouldnt matter. When that company calls the local Walgreens they will give them the Work Number and Walgreens acct number so they can call there and get the info they need to verify employment. Hope this helps...

I'm tempted to say 'for ever' ... however most HR departments are notorious for loosing information even on CURRENT employees ...

Most previous companies will only confirm your Job Title, Start and end dates and salary. Some will say something like 'we would hire him/her again' (others won't even say that).
