Old Reliable... that thing is damn near indestructable and cheap. It's an entry level gun, but I don't think there's a sportsman out there who doesn't have one.

Definitely a field gun though, not something I'd want to take to a trap/skeet competition.

I had a friend who had been the top gunsmith at two high-end stores. He once said there were two guns that were seldom brought in for repairs considering the number that had been sold. One was the Belgian Browning Superposed over-and-under and the other was the Remington 870.

There are many accessories available for it including aftermarket barrels from Remington and Hastings, ranging from 3" magnums (with the proper receiver), and short ones to rifled slug barrels.

Manufacture began in 1950 and millions have been sold. Anything that's been in production this long must be good.

Yes, you can pretty much shoot anything out of this gun. You will not be disappointed with it. I have had mine for 15 years, and it has been to hell and back and still works perfectly. It has been used in pouring rain, subzero temps, heat, dust, I've gotten dirt and chaff inside it, it has some deep rust spots and it still has never malfunctioned once. On top of all that I have only cleaned it maybe 5 times. Yes, I know i'm probably going to hell for all the sins I have commited against this gun, but it seems to take all this abuse and ask for more. It has to be in the top 3 for most reliable guns ever made.

The Rem. 870 is the standard by which all domestic shotguns are judged. It has been in constant production since 1950.

I bought mine in 1974. I have used it for hunting, competition, and even as a duty shotgun. I've added an extension tube and put on a synthetic stock. Never had to have anyone touch the internals. Second oldest and most reliable gun I own. Currently, it's being used for IPSC games and home protection.

Extremely reliable. Becomes very smooth-operating with use. You can get one with a 18" barrel for home protection, and add an interchangeable bird-hunting barrel with interchangeable Rem-chokes if you want to hunt with it. Or buy one with the bird barrel, and add the 18" barrel. I have shot skeet with one that had a 21" deer barrel with rifle sights on it; it can be done!

It is the yardstick; if I could only have one weapon this would be it. Get a slug gun barrel for brush hunting or under the bed; use the longer barrel with interechangable chokes for everything else. It will always be worth more than you paid for it.

Excellent gun. I have 2. My dads which is 50 years old and a new synthetic one with a 3.5 inch chamber. Keep em clean and oiled and you will never have a problem. I use both guns regularly.

had one for 15 year (maybe more) great gun for the price, I shoot as well and any other type owner (maybe better on some days) Cleaning is a snap to disassemble and reassemble. If it ever breaks, I will get another exactly the same!

Remington, Mossberg, Ithaca, Winchester, they are all great shotguns, its just a matter of personal preference & the size of your wallet.*
