check the use by date on it, by law there must be one

I have a pack of Lurpak in the fridge the use by date is 16/01/08

I'd say even longer than a month, but only if you don't keep it out of the fridge for long periods, a case of getting it out, using it and putting it back straight away.

Rancid butter smell and tastes like blue cheeses, they have that mouldy flavour.

Roughly a month in a covered butter dish. Believe me, you will know if it goes rancid! Its very obvious.
