Tithing began before the law. The law only regulated tithing. But we are to give with faith and love. Paul and Jesus both taught about tithing. Read Gal 3:13, Rom 4:12, Heb 7:8

Tithing is not new testament/covenant. When Paul makes his statement about being entitled to support by the churches, he does not use tithing as a means to justify it; rather he cites not muzzling the ox that treads out the grain.

A tithe was the tenth of the increase of produce and/or livestock. A tithe was never a tenth of one's wages.

Those who promote tithing have no understanding of covenants or Scripture. They work from assumptions and rationalization. These are sure-fire methods of teaching and believing falsehoods.

The concept of tything must be followed to it's intended practical purpose. God through the eons has established tything for two main reasons:

1. So that we would trust Him with our finances and shed the natural tendency for greed. It is not like God really needs 10% of our income but what He does need is to know that our money does not prevent complete surrender to His will and purpose.

The issue of money is brought up by Jesus more times than any other in the New Testament. It is the number one deterrent from seeking and trusting God and the tithe is an exercise in faith and trust specifically for this reason.

2. The tithe was established in the Old Testament as a means of providing for God's temple and the Levite priests who were limited by God's commandment from pursuing a life of amassing wealth.

Since the rest of the Hebrew nation were blessed by God's doing and since the Levities were prevented from sharing in that financial blessing, God required the tithe for their provision.

Although the church has replaced the levitical order (based on the Book of Hebrews) God has never in the New Testament superseded this particular expectation and any attempt to find a justification for it's elimination is based on pure speculation.

Without the tithe, modern day churches would be forced to become nothing more than businesses (the reason many have become just that) and ministers would have to abandon their devotion to the ministry to pursue self interests.

The only clear reference to the tithe for Christians in the New Testament is where Abraham (a type of the believer) pays tithes to Melchizedek (a type of Christ) in Hebrews Chapter 7.

Tithing is under the law, not taught in the new testament after the cross. Hebrews tells more.

All of the old commandments, statutes and ordinances were perfectly fulfilled by Jesus Christ and set aside, in favor of the new and better covenant, paid for with Christ's own blood.

Good thing, too, because the old law never saved a soul!

The Catholic church is the sole, new covenant faith authority ... founded, authorized, empowered, and eternally guaranteed by Jesus ... and it was the Catholic church that readopted and readapted the spirit of the old law to the sacred realities of the grace-filled new covenant.

There is no requirement to pay ten percent to the church, under the new covenant.

The official church policy calls for everyone to contribute their time, talent, and treasure to the support of the church, according to their means, and according to their conscience.

That amount could be more ... or it could be less.

In the mean time, God will keep the books!

Jesus said " Think not that I come to destroy the law,or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill" Matt5:17. God wants his children to be more than 'tithe' giving Christians, He expects much more even our very lives must be dedicate to Him.

Jesus said that the woman that gave a small amount gave more than anyone. So Jesus wasn't set on a certain amount of money, just the amount that you can afford to give.
