It's 'pose to be 15,000 and that's a ton to guard it and why would Panama not do it themselves?

After the US ceded the canal, the operation and maintenance contract went to China. They are also going to construct a 3rd canal that will handle the super tankers as well as US aircraft carriers in the Nimitz class and beyond. Though the US may never send such vessels through in order to make positions unknown. Rememver too that the Chinese use many of these troops for operations and maintenance. 15,000 really isn't so many. The concern though might be if you knew of the number of tanks, planes, artillery and rockets. Numbers of men are nothing. It is the weapons that count.

Having served two tours there, I can tell you that we had more Americans stationed there to defend it, plus handle some contingencey operations, than 15,000.
They are there I'm sure to protect their investment (widening it, primarily) as there is no Panamanian Defense Force since Operation Just Cause in December of 1989. Hell, we did it when we were running it up until December 31, 1999.
I actually haven't heard this figure nor the Chinese reasoning, but this is a sure thing, regardless of their numbers.

well I remember when daddy bush was pres. their was a huge drug problem, remember??? and then all or a sudden Noriega, disappeared, for quit some time, just heard his name again a few months ago, so you know something went down, also bush's have a lot of land holding's in that country, we will never know the real truth, so chinese are their I'm sure to guard something for the bush family !!!!!!!!

If Panama were to guard it there would be 15,000 less people cranking out the 1000's of keys of cocaine headed right here.......
