In my experience, heavy things don't do so well on ebay. You might make it work if you are selling $4,000 Italian Silk couches or very expensive antique furniture but for your run of the mill $1,000 sofa/loveseat set (much less for used furniture) it would never work because the expenses rates would be too high.

The only way to ship big things like this is on a pallet. An average couch weighs 120 lbs. That would mean about $300-$400 for freight. A couch with a recliner or a sofa bed weighs 180-200 lbs, so that would be even more expensive.

BTW, there are only 35,000 listings for furniture on ebay, compared with 1.4 million for electronics altother. Think small, light and expensive

Furniture Shipping Cost

Ebay prices are almost always jacked up way too high due to shipping, when it's all said and done, and that is why I don't shop with them. Pay special attn to any item that seems like the seller is trying to profit from shipping charges. They list the item extremely low, then bend you over to send it to you.

If you want furniture, you might consider overstock.com. It has flat shipping charge of $2.95 every day and sometimes it is free, but you do have to wait for it to come through the postal service. When you are comparison shopping this can be a huge factor in what the total cost of your item will be and could very well be worth it.

Better yet, do your homework online, then go to a furniture store that carries that manufacturer, and see if they have it in stock, or have them order it for you. Then you just pickup at the store. It is usually a lower cost for shipping, because they just toss your item on the truck that is already headed to that store. You may not even have to pay anything, esp if they special order it due to being out at the showroom when you wanted it...

I have found that the cheapest way to ship a sofa is thru www.shippi.com. They ship items based on the weight you need to ship. Usually to ship a sofa it is around $135 and it arrives in 3-4 days.
