Most technically, DC current flows in one direction only while AC current changes direction periodically. This periodic change in direction can be regular, as in the case of the AC current that comes out of the wall that changes direction once every 0.0083333 seconds. Or irregular, as in the case of the AC current coming from your stereo speaker output.
More loosely, engineers will refer to DC as a steady current, such as that from a battery, that changes very little with time, while AC current changes noticably and rapidly with time, but doesn't necessarily change direction.
