Here are some short and clear descriptions of the artist and his work. You will see that his career is divided up into different periods, each given a name: blue (melancholy adolescence) pink period (first love ) etc. Each one is associated with a different woman who was his lover and muse. Pics and short texts at http://www.eyeconart.net/history/cubism.htm
Also look at http://www.artchive.com/artchive/P/picasso.html
When you are reading - it is important to note that he (with another artist called Braque) invented the style of painting called cubism which did away from traditional way of painting where objects/people were depicted as realistically as possible. Picasso (and many people after him) only showed those parts of a object or figure which he wanted to. This could also mean two views of a single feature (e.g. a nose or a mouth)
Also - v. important - is his painting Guernica - which is the most famous ant-war picture of the 20th century.

He loved power, not only his own but respected others power as well. As a result he joined the Communist Party. He was very cruel to his family and friends and enjoyed pitting them against each other in arguments. He had a grudging respect for Matisse and said when Matisse died that he (Matisse) was the only true painter). He had many mistresses. He not only painted but was also involved in pottery, print and sculpture. Hid friends paintings from the Nazis during WWII at the risk of his own life. He was very superstitious.

I don't know very much, but I remember hearing that when he wrote checks to pay for things his signature was worth more than the money, so people wouldn't cash his checks.
