Laws vary from state to state. Contact your local DMV (Dept of Motor Vehicles) - they should point you in the right direction to get an answer.

Here in Texas you enroll in Driver's ed prior to getting your permit and they prepare you for the written exam. After you get your permit they take you driving around with the instructor but you still have to keep your permit for six months before you can get your license, unless you're 18. 18 yr. olds just take the written exam and then can drive and get their license that same day even granted that they do pass the written test.

By the way, here you don't have to go to Driver's Ed. You can have a parent teach you everything using a specific program that the DPS mails you. The parent signs off on everything and you can take the test for the permit.

It depends on how old you are. Here in California, if you are under 18 you have to go to drivers ed before you get a permit. After 18 you can just go get the permit. However, I don't know about other states, but it may be similar.
