Both takes good images, but Canon's kit lens are cheaply made.

Except for the kit lens, however, there are more Canon lens than Sony's and Canon L lenses are very highly regarded among professionals. This means that you get more options when it comes to lenses (and other accessories as well), and if you want to dig deep into your pocket, you'll get a world class optics attached to your camera.

Other than that... well I'd suggest you to go to a camera shop and try the camera yourself. Chances are you are going to like the Sony better in your hand because the XTi's grip is too small - but apart from that it's a very nice camera that can take good pictures.

I have the XTi (400D) and except for that grip, I never had any problem and it takes great pictures. But I am planning to upgrade to a 40D when I got the cash - thanks to that silly grip that made the camera felt like a toy.

The Sony. Why? Because it has Super Steady Shot (aka Image Stabilization) IN the camera body. It also has dust removal for the sensor.

You can use every MINOLTA MAXXUM Auto Focus lens made since 1985 with the Sony A100. You can buy an adapter to use the older MINOLTA MC*/MD* manual focus lenses - so you can search ebay for a 50mm f1.2 or 58mm f1.2 and have a super fast lens for low-light photography.

*MC was the designation for Meter Coupled lenses; MD was the designation for lenses which were compatible with the MINOLTA X-700 in Program Mode. I've used both on my MINOLTA SRT-202, XG-9, XE-7 and X-700. I've never used Program Mode and doubt I ever will.
