Six criteria for Hijaab.
According to Qur’an and Sunnah there are basically six criteria for observing hijaab:
1.
Extent:
The first criterion is the extent of the body that should be covered. This is different for men and women. The extent of covering obligatory on the male is to cover the body at least from the navel to the knees. For women, the extent of covering obligatory is to cover the complete body except the face and the hands upto the wrist. If they wish to, they can cover even these parts of the body. Some scholars of Islam insist that the face and the hands are part of the obligatory extent of ‘hijaab’.
All the remaining five criteria are the same for men and women.
2.
The clothes worn should be loose and should not reveal the figure.
3.
The clothes worn should not be transparent such that one can see through them.
4.
The clothes worn should not be so glamorous as to attract the opposite sex.
5.
The clothes worn should not resemble that of the opposite sex.
6.
The clothes worn should not resemble that of the unbelievers i.e. they should not wear clothes that are specifically identities or symbols of the unbelievers’ religions.

. Hijaab includes conduct and behaviour among other things
Complete ‘hijaab’, besides the six criteria of clothing, also includes the moral conduct, behaviour, attitude and intention of the individual. A person only fulfilling the criteria of ‘hijaab’ of the clothes is observing ‘hijaab’ in a limited sense. ‘Hijaab’ of the clothes should be accompanied by ‘hijaab’ of the eyes, ‘hijaab’ of the heart, ‘hijaab’ of thought and ‘hijaab’ of intention. It also includes the way a person walks, the way a person talks, the way he behaves, etc.

If you meant just face & wrist...yes women have rights to refuse. In the case otherwise as well nobody can force them to an extent which they can't tolerate physically.
A man should explain to his wife importance of Hijab in todays world and the punishment for not covering the body properly in the hereafter. If she continues to disobey him in this regards he can make the decision to divorce her on account of her refusal.
It is important for parents to instill true islamic teachings into their children, so to protect them from all sins.
At the end of the day everyone has to decide on their own for all their deeds.
Islam insists upon strength of belief and integrity of thought for without that no structure can stand. At the same time, it makes it clear that there is no compulsion in religion.
Every individual will be sole responsible for his/her own deeds on the Day of Judgment.

I keep hearing a lot of ignorant hate talk about Islam, yes there are some terrible things that go on in the name of religion and a lot of them today happen in countries with Islamic law.
Take Saudi Arabia, a close friend of the USA, where women are treating as second class citizens.
But then again there are other counties where the story is every different.
Take for example Jordan. (please take the time to check out the links)
Let's hate the things that merit hate, and not just everyone who see things differently to us.
It's though rationality that things are improved.
No offence 'Will s' but I think you'll find that though they may not have whores like America" quite a few of the men in Saudi Arabia have used the service of such experts!

Hi there (I'm a Muslim) Please ignore these nasty comments above. Ofcourse it is! Your nuns wear hijabs, as did Mary. Head coverings are an obligation in christianity as it is in Islam. I personally don't have a problem with you wearing one, I think it's a beautiful step closer to heaven. Just remember most will assume you are a Muslim. I would hope that If you decide to wear one, you won't be going to places like bars and clubs.. Because people will have the wrong perception. But that I can not stop you from doing. Interesting question :)

According to the 'rules' they obviously can't choose not to wear it, but the rules are bent to accomodate various indigenous customs etc.
Like someone above wrote, it's an Arab custom, adopted by Islam (because that's what religions do, subsume existing practices and either eradicate them or sanctify them). Once it is part of the official 'rules' though, it creates problems with bunches of clerics having pseudo-arguments about whether it's right or wrong.
Will S, you are obviously ill-informed. It is well-known that there are prostitues in Islamic countries. The Egyptian author and doctor Nawal El Sadaawi wrote a well known book about it. I also saw a documentary about whores in Iran.

Let's think about this... a woman who gets gang raped is sentenced to 200 lashes. A sixteen year old girl is stoned (and video taped) because she liked a boy, and in Canada (not a muslim country) a father kills his daughter for not wearing hijab. I think the "right" to anything is strictly forbidden by the Islamic culture, if not the religion.
(Yes, religions have their own unique cultures).

Someone's been doing their homework !
I don't know Gorgeous. One of my closest friends is a Muslim, albeit an American one. The thought of him trying to force his wife to do anything she doesn't want to is unthinkable, even laughable. I'm smiling just thinking about it.
But I really can't say how it works in other countries. I should ask him what his experience has been.

Yes she does and nothing would happen 2 her. There is no law under Islam that says something happens 2 a woman who doesnt wear hijab. All u ppl who arent even muslims shouldnt try and teach muslims their religion. Even it is hard 4 us 2 understand it. And if u dont no arabic then it is impossible 4 u 2 understand it.
The hijab is there 2 keep a woman modest and not turn out 2 b a whore like so much western women who hav sex on TV and corrupt men.
