Sure, liquids aren't a problem in checked bags unless they are explosive or whatever. The only issue with a wine bottle is that it needs to be wrapped well. Tourists do this all the time.

Lets clear the air on this one. If you place a liquid in your suitcase and check it in and the airport has an X-ray machine and finds the bottle your luggage will be pulled. This is especially true on international flight where almost all luggages is X-rayed.

You are allowed to carry on 3 bottles of wine on international flight, however the wine has to be purchased after the TSA security check. The wine will be placed in a bag with a custom tag and your flight number.

On domestic airlines you should contact the local airline about their policy and also go to www.tsa.gov and read what the current requirement for screening are.

I travel a lot both domestic and international and seems there are different standards at different airports. Here in the states TSA has set up one standard you should really check their web site to get the straight scoop.

You can check a bag with the wine bottle in it - but you want to make sure that it is packed extremely secure, as your luggage tends to get tossed around and occasionally things do get broken and you would not want all of your luggage ruined because of the wine breaking.

You can take wine in your baggage. It is not classed as dangerous goods (it's not considered flammable as someone mentioned before).

There are however a few things you need to consider:
1. Does the carry of alcohol violate national laws? (Don't carry it with you when traveling into countries as Iran or Saudi Arabia)

2. Check the customs regulations (are there limited quantities to what you can take with you?)

3. Check if there's a customs fee on importing it! (it would be a bit expensive if you have to pay taxes over the amount you carry)

Yes, it it fine to place a bottle in your 'checked' bag only. On an international flight, you may have to declare it to customs, upon arrival, if purchased out of the country.
