On my desktop, if I push my power button to shutdown XP, it takes less then 10 seconds and done. If I shutdown via the main user screen, it takes almost a minute. Both actions cause the XP shutdown screen to display. Why is the software action so much slower?

An yes, unplugging is the fastest way, I know that..

Well you really should be going to the start menu to shutdown as that is how you safely shut down your computer without corrupting any processes. It is also the reason is takes so long, each time you select shutdown Windows needs to quit all of the processes you have open. If you hold the power button you're just shutting down without safely quitting any programs which can corrupt your OS.

Unless you have your Power Options in the Control Panel set to "shutdown" when you press the I/O button, I would not power off this way.

Start, Shutdown, is the best way to go to ensure all programs are closed properly before power off.
