It really depends on what you're looking for. Most of Southern California is desert and it's dry, but the weather is amazing. Northern California is colder, wetter, but it's not a desert. Los Angeles is a huge city, so naturally it's going to be dirty, but there are parts that are really fun. Northern California has a lot of really cool cities too, like San Fransisco, Sacramento, etc. Both places are awesome, it just depends on you.

The person who said California is dirty, racist and overpriced has never been here obviously. It has it's bad areas like every other state but a lot of natural beauty. I can be expensive, no more so than many other tourist destinations. Southern California coast has wide, sandy beaches, lots of swimming and surfing. Further north the forest gets closer to the coast, beach areas can be narrower, but stunning, with beautiful cliff views and rocky coasts. Water sports are popular throughout the coastal areas. The mountains are rocky and rise steeply. They're gorgeous year round.
You can visit San Francisco. Culturally diverse and full of history. You never lack for anything to do there, there's wonderful shopping, sightseeing, and gorgeous scenery. The people are friendly, dining is fabulous (go to Scoma's). SF is very hilly, it only adds to it's charm. You have to visit the Embarcadero - Pier 39 is very popular, and you can tour Alcatraz.
For a quieter, upscale coastal experience, Montery and Carmel in the north. Laguna Beach and Newport Beach in the South are lovely, Laguna is very artsy and easygoing, lots of art festivals, gorgeous beaches and friendly people. Weather in the Southern beach areas tends to be a little more predictable, but weather throughout the state is pretty temperate.
San Diego is a perfect vacation destination. Again, culturally diverse, gorgeous beaches, shopping, theatre, great dining, you name it, you'll never lack for anything to do.

i would say if you're young Southern California would be your choice, because there's so much to do and so much entertainment, a lot of crazy people and a lot of parties. But if you're older maybe Northern California will fit you, because it's not as crowded as SoCal, and it's more peaceful and less stressful. But remember don't be messing with us Californians!!

South California, good weather, there are good schools in some parts, good night life. But Northern California is cool too, they seem more peaceful there...

Southern California has the meanest, nastiest people on the planet. I live in Orange County and i hate it. Too many snobs hung up on money. The traffic is horrendous. Always someone tailgating you or giving you the stink eye. Forget California. Move somewhere nice like Northern Arizona or Utah! This state sucks!

Southern California is beautifull especially the weather and scenic drives where you are driving along the ocean. the pasture is nice too. I love living here. But you must have good money though to live in most places. try living in orange county or san diego county.

THAT- depends on YOU! Generally, it gets warmer, sunnier, & drier- as you go from north to south. Of course it can be pretty congested around the cities (& more expensive to live)... But in eastern Calif. it isn't too bad; & it's a whole DIFFERENT World up in the Mountains... And if you REALLY want to "get away from it all", you can always move to Death Valley- where it's so hot most of the time- even your Relatives won't come to visit!!! :)
