And when I try to type something over it agin I still cannot get rid of them

Couple of things.

1. If your text is "justified" it will be straight down (with no jagged edge). With hyphenation off, large words will wrap to the next line. I always use "left justified."

2. You could use "justified" if you like it, but then set your document to be hyphenated with Tools, Language, Hyphenation, automatic hyphenation.

We are advised not to have more than two hyphenations following one another so this could present a problem. Easier to switch to left justified.

3. Check your font.
click Format
Font
click "character spacing" tab and be sure it is set to "normal."

Is your paragraph justified? That would do it.
You can also check out your character options and see if the character and word spacing are at their default setting.
Also try changing the font.
Or use your style menu to remove formatting and apply a different style.
