I've blown seals on a Swinger 3-way and seen other shocks that blew......but that means they leak and won't hold air anymore until you replace the parts. Sometimes you can damage a shock with a hard bottom-out, but not usually.

They will not burst and send shrapnel into your legs, though. The canisters are made to withstand several times the pressure that they operate under, and the seals will fail before the metal will. No worries.

No, it won't explode. As others have stated, compressing all the way is called bottoming out. It can be a bit uncomfortable to hit bottom, but it isn't dangerous. With proper pre-load (or sag) set this should only happen infrequently.

Beyond the jolt to your body when the shock bottoms out, the worst damage your shock is likely to face is a blown seal or ring. Seals and rings are standard wear items. The combination of dirt, usage and friction are going to cause them to fail at some point. You can buy rebuild kits for most better shocks and forks to restore them to to new condition.

Hope this helps.

No. When the shock compresses it's called bottom out. Nothing happens unless it's many times, or very hard. But it's hard to bottom out some air shocks when they have the right pressure on it, I think.
