This questions sounds so dumb, but it's a concept I've been confused on for a long time. My normal temp runs between 96.7 and 97.2 ish. I know that this is 1.5 to 2 degrees lower than normal. If my temperature is around a 98.6 does that mean I'm running a slight fever, or do they still only consider it a fever if it is in the 99.9 range? Should I be as concerned about a 100 degree temp as most people are about a 102? The main reason I ask is becuase I always feel like I have a fever at around 98.6 degrees (chills, muscle achiness, etc) but I don't know exactly what it means. I hope this question makes sense and isn't too dumb. I'm pregnant with my 2nd child and just trying to monitor my health closely because I've had some early complications. Thanks in advance!

The reason I ask now is because I never think of it unless I'm feeling sick. Since I only have pregnancy insurance, I don't normally go to the doctor on a regular basis. (Except when pregnant) The main reason I ask on here is because I thought I'd see if someone knew while it was on my mind.

My normal temp. is 96.6. I have had it taken many times. I asked the Dr. if it was anything to worry about and he said No. Not all people have a temp of 98.6 It is whatever is normal for you. When my temp goes to 98.6 I feel like I have a fever also and the doc said that I did but that a temp of 98.6 or 99.6 is nothing to worry about, just take Tylenol. If you feel bad at a higher temp I would notify the Dr. because you are pregnant but If it were me I would first take Tylenol to see if it went down. If it did and I felt ok I would not worry about it, but I'm not pregnant. Most doctors are not going to pay attention to a 98.6 or 99.6 temp. If it got to 100 or higher I would definitely call the Dr but I doubt they would do anything unless you have other symptoms like chills, nausea, vomiting etc.

If you normal temperature runs lower than most people's, then you will have a fever at a lower temperature.

Fortunately, there are other systemic symptoms that you can use to let you know it's time to go see a doctor. Fevers are often preceded by chills, which is your body telling you it's at a temperature lower than it wants. Muscle aches, fatigue, weakness, and exhaustion are also good indications that something is going on. If an Ibprofen or other NSAID makes you feel hot and sweaty, that is also a good indication that you have a fever.

I would say yes. Anything higher than YOUR norm is a slight fever. I have the exact same problem. My normal temp is like 97 or 96. But, I have a hard time convincing the nurses at urgent care that 98.9 or 99.7 is high (for me)! But since it is slightly high and not VERY high, I guess they don't care that much. Just wait though, some nurse will come on and say I am wrong.

What does your doctor say? A normal temp is 98 anything lower is 96-97 is OK. But you say when it gets to 98 you feel like you have a fever. Ask your OBGYN.
