Of course, think about all the tear jerker movies, ;you have compassion, but your not the one that is actually suffering, except for the ticket prices that is. But any way thats an example.

We can feel and have compassion without suffering, but what we lack is empathy. For example, until you've suffered the loss of a loved one, you can feel sorry for someone else's loss, but you really can't understand the depths of their suffering.
Empathy is developed when you compare your own experiences to someone else's and know something about what they're going through. A friend of mine is in the middle of cancer treatment, and she's afraid that she may die. A few years ago, I sweated out test results that might have meant the end of my own life.
As a result, I know a little about the fear and emotional upheaval that she's going through. If it hadn't been for my own health scare, I wouldn't understand a little bit about how frightened she is and be able to reach out to her in ways that will be of more help to her.

Easily. Just never mind the word's origin. Imagine: you're a doctor for some doctor's association that freely lends a hand in poor countries. If you suffered for every patient you saw you'd be dead in no time. Furthermore, only the sufferer truly suffers, that's how it is. But you just anted to point out the word's origin, correct?

No, in order to demonstrate compassion, there must be suffering. It doesn't mean that you are the one suffering. For example, if someone falls, I can demonstrate compassion and help them up.

Some say compassion with suffering is pity. I guess it all depends if you have empathy in your heart.
Question what is pity without compassion?

To an extent, yes. Before anyone I knew had died, when someone I didn't know that was somehow connected to someone I knew had died, I felt sorry for them and tried to show compassion. But I couldn't really understand their feelings and comfort them effectively until someone close to me died.
So yeah, ya can, but its more sincere and understanding if you've suffered.

You can always be compassionate towards others but you achieve the necessary humility to do something about unfair issues, only by walking in another's shoes.
