Do not be embarrassed at all. I am out of shape (5'10 220 pounds) but i look like i am about 190 or 200. Sort of average size looking. Do not care about people there. The gym is full of different kinds of people. I think you need to find someone who you know that works out and tell them you would like to join. If you live in New York send me a message and we can work out together at Bally's. I am losing weight too. Good luck though.

A majority of people that go to the gym will respect newbies as long as they follow the norms everyone should be following.
1. Clean your machine after you use it. Wipe sweat off and what not.
2. Don't joke around. You can have fun but acting stupid can really mess with people that get into a zone. Will make you unpopular.
3. Pick up weights when you are done using them.
4. Figure out what you are doing before you go to the gym. Just running on the treadmill is not enough if you want to get in shape. This is true for girls and guys.
5. Work out all your muscles. Don't give the bs excuse of I don't want to get huge. You dont get huge or slim overnight and you will have a tough enough time dedicating yourself the first month or so.
6. Do your research. Going into the gym and trying out a little of everything gets nothing done.
7. Take breaks in between sets. Usually a minute or so works.
8. Don't feel embarassed about going to the gym. Everyone starts someplace and for every asshole you meet there are a thousand people that aren't.
9. How does showing off muscles make you a poser? Also why not show them off. It takes a lot of hard work to get into shape and nobody would get into shape in the first place if they didn't care if anyone else noticed.

It really does depend on the gym..some are "Barbie and Ken" gyms and others are full of ordinary people just looking to be healthy. You should go for a few "tours" at the gyms near you. Some gyms (like the one I work for), offer 2 free training sessions when you join, so that you are familiar with the equipment and have a good starting place. After that, a personal trainer can be used as often as you need, sometimes that's only once a month or less, just to freshen up your work out with new moves. Don't be afraid to ask for what you want..don't feel pressured to buy more sessions than you want from a trainer.

First, don't be ashamed of wanting to be healthy. Most gyms I've been to have someone who will show you how to use the equipment. It's in their best interest so no one gets hurt. Once you know what type of exercise you feel comfortable with (cardio, aerobics, weights, etc), you can find many resources on line or at the library to help you put together a program. Before you join a gym, ask to look around, some will even let you work out a few times for free to see if you like the facilities. Go at a time when you will be most likely to go to see how crowded it is and what type of people are there. I think you'll find that most places are full of regular people just like us who just want to improve /maintain their health. Good luck!

go in the off-peak hours. once you are acclimated to the various machines and exercises it will be much easier to go at other times of the day.
trust me we all felt like a total knob the first day in the gym! my father made me go to the gym when I was 13. back then my knees where bigger than my quads. I'm pretty sure the 1st time he dropped me off I was crying...lol
