My 13-year-old son has eczema on his legs and arms. He has all the lotion he needs to clear it up, but seldom bothers to apply them. When I volunteer or insist to put lotion on his legs and arms, suggest that he does so, or tell him I am going to rub it on him after his bath/shower it invariably turns into a battle or argument. His legs and arms are in such a bad state and I really do want to help. What do you advise?

Typically, skin conditions such as eczema have to do with poor dieting. Learn here https://tr.im/mRHHN
Eczema food triggers such as eggs, fish, peanuts, and soy are known to help reduce flare-ups, but this can vary from person to person. These foods may also exacerbate eczema because many people cannot properly digest the proteins, which causes an allergic reaction.

I've had eczema all my life and understand what you and your son are going through. Eczema/dermatitis isn't cancer, but it can be very trying on the whole family. Please accept my sympathies for your plight.

As for what to do, I strongly recommend seeing a dermatologist who specializes in atopic dermatitis. I've seen about 20 over my 42 years, and I have had by far the best experiences in university hospitals. Doctors affiliated with hospitals may refer you to colleagues who are specialists in your son's condition.

What others wrote about diet and personal hygiene is correct, but results take a long time and hard to follow for long periods of time. Have an immunologist adminster a scratch / prick test. I did and was shocked at what I turned out to be allergic to.

The most important thing is to hang in there and believe someone how to treat your son's dermatitis effectively. It may take several visits before the dermatologist is able to control it; that's normal. But you and your son have to do whatever it takes to get it under control. I did, and it changed my life.

As far as creams go, it is hit or miss, but my pediatrician recommended, believe it or not - DOVE Sensitive Skin body wash and you know what, it worked like a charm? All the flaking and scaling are GONE. But again for creams, I would stick with the eucerins, etc. They are the best out there, and they can only compliment the dove. take care,
Andrea
