The original "gun powder" was actually what we call "black powder", which is a mix of naturally occuring ingrediants, and yes, the chinese first brought it into use. Modern firearms fire a different (man made) type of powder. In the U.S. there are approximateley 80 million firearms in the hands of civilians, the majority of those fire the modern powder in a cartridge form. I cannot honestly say that I have ever read a figure on how many shooters use black powder weapons today. Also, since the it has been ruled that a black powder weapon is not considered a "firearm" by the BATFE, I do not know of any stats kept on them. But with the growing popularity of black powder shoots, I'd hazard a guess at two to 4 million black powder weapons in use today in the U.S. as a minimum figure.

The nitro-based smokeless powder used in handguns designed in the last 100 or so years has virtually nothing in common with the historic Chinese sulfur/charcoal-based gunpowder to which you refer other than having to light them somehow, they propel a projectile because of expanding gas and rising pressure AND they both tend to be black (there are exceptions to the color, by the way).
So, no. Usually only in replica muzzleloading handguns which are very rarely used illegally OR in self-defense.
What's your point, besides being misinformed?

If you are talking about black powder, there might be that many. Smokeless powder was invented by DuPont and is the most common gunpowder used today.

Actually, modern smokeless powder is more closely related to Nitroglycerine than to Black Powder.
As for the origin of Nitro, it was invented by an Italian, I think, but its safe manufacture and wide use are generally credited to Alfred Nobel - The peace Prize guy - who also owned the arms manufacturer Bofors.

wat? all guns rely on gunpowder. thats what gives the bullet enough force to be "shot" out of the barrel. im not sure whether i understand your question...
are you asking whether we get chinas sloppy seconds in gunpowder? if so. no. gunpowder cant be reused....
you should try to state your question better.
