I tried painting it with acrylic but it does not work. I do not get a smooth surface. Any ideas? Does anyone think that spray paint is better to get smooth surfaces?

I'd go with either acrylic or enamel...the kinds of paint used for model cars. These are very bright and can be used on a very small surface. Acrylics dry much faster and are water based, which makes clean up easier. Enamel is a little tougher in that you'll have to make sure you have paint thinner (or similar) around to clean your brushes and your work surface.
