I tried to "google it", as one other person suggested, but it would have taken forever to find the right article. I did find out that in 1840, Ireland's population was 8.2 million; in 1841, it was down to 8 million, by 1845--when the potato famine hit--the population was down to 5 million. Within 1 year (to 1846), 1.5 million people had died from starvation due to the disease that ruined their one main crop and another 1.5 million had immigrated to the U.S.
An easy way to find out would be to get a World Almanac & Book of Facts. This book can be a godsend in your studies--especially of past history, current events, etc. The 2007 edition is in most bookstores and the one for 2008 will be out soon, according to their website ..
