My husband is thinking about joining the National Guard it is 8 yrs. I thought with other branches of the military you can sign up for just 2 years at the lowest?

Every Contract with the military is 8 years.

You can do as little as 2 years active (the other 6 would be in the reserves)

All contracts are for 8 years. The part you sign up for is how much Active Duty you want compared to Reserve or Guard time. So I would imagine if you are guard then all of your time is Guard so you would have to do the full 8 as guard.

The 2 year Call to Service is 2 years Active, it is still an 8 year total committment, as are all initial US military enlistments.

my cousin joined the National Guard when he was called up again and he has a 2 year contract. he's a 3 year noncombatant because he spent a lot in Iraq when he was in the Army

ALL CONTRACTS ARE EIGHT YEARS LONG. doesn't matter how many years are AD. the military can hold you, legally, for eight years.

the average is 4 years Active Duty.

for the ARMY its a minimum 15 month + training, 2yr + training, or 3 - 6 yrs after that

The army still has two year enlistments but make sure you read the contract
