As a mental health professional with 20+ years experience, now retired, I can share with you what a psychiatrist I once worked with "prescribed" to his patients regularly to deal with depression and anxiety. He told them to go for a walk, several times a week, for leisurely purpose only. No chores can accompany your walk, and you can't walk your dog or such. Start out comfortably slow, and then as you begin to feel your body "get in the groove" and loosen up a bit, pick up the pace a bit so you can begin to feel an increase in your breathing and heart rate. After a while (no specific distance prescribed), begin to slow down as you return to your starting point / home, etc., so that your body won't feel any cramping with a quick stop. Do this at least 4 times a week, but not all 7 days. Give at least one day of rest. He told me that if his patients would do this, we'd dang near be out of business. But, he quickly added, they won't do it because they want a fancy diagnosis and expensive prescriptions just to feel "big about themselves". He was right, in all aspects of what he said. Give it a try and see if his "prescription" is still as good as it was years ago. He was a great man. God Bless you.

If you exercise frequently -- both body and mind -- it alleviates a lot of tensions in your life. Daily 3-mile walk or jog, swimming, tennis, golf, tai-chi, body-building: whatever appeals to you most. Do check with your doctor first to see if you're physically fit enough to handle this regimen.

Read as much as possible, preferably subjects that won't either bore or depress you. History, gardening, the arts, sports, parenting, animals, etc. Keep your mind busy with new and interesting thoughts that don't involve sadness and death.

Listen to music, preferably instrumental like classical, jazz, or new age.

The holidays are a tough enough time for non-depressives, so you have to make that extra-special effort to keep your mind off the bad things and focus on what really matters.

And get some sleep too. Good, long 8-hour deep sleeps.

Go to therapy and tell the doctor that you'd rather not take medication unless absolutely necessary. Unless the depression is really severe, a little counseling should do the trick.

1. Make a list of everything good in your-- you have electricity, eyes to see with, a mind to think with, and so on

2. Refuse to tell yourself negative things

3. Help other people. Be more focused on others than yourself.

4. Get out in public. Look nice. Go for a walk.

5. Remind yourself that nothing no matter how good or how bad it is lasts forever and you can get through this.

You can't. See a doctor. The people telling you that you can, have evidently never been depressed. If you do what they say and feel better, then you were not depressed at all.

Depression is serious business. Please educate yourself to the symptoms and treatments and get some help. Don't try to do this on your own. Here are more resources:
