trust me gear or not the diet is what determines the rate of gains in terms of muscle mass. i've actually seen people lose weight and/or stay at the same weight from an insufficient amount of cals and nutrients in the diet.
the most gains are seen in the first 2 years of training as this is when the body is in it's highest most untrained state. the longer the time in training the slower gains in muscle mass there are regardless of how perfect the diet may be. that being the case if you are not seeing the gains in muscle and you are training at a high level of intensity and regularly then your diet and/or caloric intake is the problem. to gain mass if you are at average body fat or less use 35% protein, 45% carbs and 20% fats. increase the cals by 10% each week until weight gain occurs.
the current level of body fat has a big effect on the rate of muscle mass increase. when the body is lean (low body fat) nutrient uptake in skeletal muscle is high. when the body fat is high insulin sensitivity is low and increases in muscle mass will be minimal even with the best diet and training program. i recommend that males not let the body fat get much higher than 16% if they are serious about packing on muscle

taking a protein shake before you work out builds muscle and of course weight training is essential.
