It is illegal unless you have an ORV license and are on state property and/or lakes designated for snowmobiles. You can also ride on your own private property or property of another person as long as you have their permission. You can not ride "legally" on the road or roadside of a limited access highway. Understand that in many rural areas up north and in the U.P. snowmobiles are tolerated by the police because of the winter conditions as it is often times the only means of transportation due to the high volume of snow.

Sorry, I just corrected the link and now have the correct one entered. You will find the Michigan laws governing snowmobiles here.

No, well it depends. One you need an ORV license from the DNR. Then it depends on the city. Down state in like the Metro Detroit area it is because of the private property and city ordinances. Plus they don't get too much snow. I live in Sault Ste. Marie, or at least I go to school there. They don't really plow the roads and stuff, unless it melts off. So they don't really care, people ride snowmobiles down the street, sidewalk, we have trails that go through the city, I've even seen people ride em to the store. As long as you do it during the day people don't mind.

As for you question it may be a local ordinance or something. But it should be fine if you have a ORV license. But it is definitely not illegal in the state.

It is illegal EVERYWHERE to ride ANYTHING on the side of the road. You can legally ride a snowmobile on PRIVATE property with the owners permission.
